The Removal of Instagram Likes Can Make You Love Yourself

In this time of technology and constant developing ideas I think we can all agree that social media is one of the most powerful tools of our generation. Social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have completely dominated the social media market and has accomplished a lot of success stories for people looking to expand their self identity and personal/business brands. We have evolved from using these applications to connect with friends and to share information. As we evolve as people these apps will grow with us but some changes are hard to get used to. Instagram has been testing a new update that removes our most commonly features… the “like” button!

The Instagram like button has been a feature since the social app made its debut in 2010. The like button gives you a chance to examine the engagement happening between you and your followers. The more likes you get equals the more influence you have over people. Due to this reason we had completely saturated Instagram to be a market mostly based on looks, wealth, and social status. This leads a lot of people to the feeling of self doubt. According to Instagram’s Twitter account (how ironic!) the change is so that users can “focus on the photos and videos you share, nor how many likes they get.”

People’s reactions are so focused on the change that they don’t even realize how beneficial this really can be for their own mental health. “We will make decisions that hurt the business if they help people’s well-being and health,” echoed Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. The psychological attachment we have created when it comes to social media sites is outstanding to see. With the removal of the like button on Instagram we can all focus less on our physical appearance and more about enjoying life in the moment. Sometimes it’s really easy to get caught up in the hype of social media but forget that the interpersonal relationships we make with people are the most important. Take the time to spend time with loved ones, self reflect on what you want to do with your life, or just take a break from the app altogether. How many likes you get doesn’t define you.
