R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan won album of the year at 2021 BET Awards, becoming the first R&B album in four years to win the category.

Sullivan spoke at the BET Virtual Press Room (in which JaGurl TV was in attendance) explaining the significance of this album.

“It feels amazing just to be recognized for my art,” Sullivan explains. “I’ve been in this game for a long time, people don’t know this its really like one of my first awards, my first time walking up to accept an award. So all of that was brand new but it felt amazing.”

The R&B songstress made her major-label debut in 2008, with her hit single “Need U Bad.” Although the singer has multiple chart-topping singles and 12 Grammy nominations, the singer has yet to receive a Grammy.

The singer gushes about the BET Awards acknowledging her hard work and sharing the experience with one of her biggest supporters, her mother.

“To have my mom here, I can’t explain it,” she begins. “You know she’s been riding with me since I came out of the womb. She believed in me! I’m just so happy to share this moment with her. We had a very rough couple of years, but God brought us through it. We’re winning awards now! We’re winning awards!”

Jazmine Sullivan gave her all in her performance at the 2021 BET Awards. Performing her latest single, “Tragic,” live for the first time, the set opened with Rep. Maxine Waters proudly reclaiming her time. Later in the set, she was joined by Ari Lennox. The duo’s sensual performance sent Twitter into a frenzy.
