MelaNie Fiona is a GRAMMY Award winning singer and songwriter from Toronto, Canada. Her hit single, “It Kills Me” entered the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009. Melanie attended this year’s Black Music Honors, and spoke openly about how wellness has become a priority in her daily life.

“My main priority is my wellness and all the practices that I have been able to establish for myself in wellness. Being able to share that with my audience is really, really important”, she says. “More than ever, we need to be well.” She says that she practices several techniques to foster wellness such as meditation, affirmations and maintaining a positive energy cycle in her life. The singer explained that it has become important to recognize that the old patterns which no longer serve her have no place in her life, and that this is important for her as a mother.

We asked Melanie what the keys to positive affirmations were, and she told us that they are to say exactly what you want for yourself, and what you envision for yourself. She recommended starting the day with positive affirmations such as “Today I will be…” and “Today I am…”

October 10th is Worldwide Mental Health Day and Melanie’s message was right on time. At Black Music Honors, she sang a tribute to R&B singer Tamia, which will air on television beginning in September. To see more of Melonie and the awards ceremony, log onto blackmusichonors.com
