The NFL has announced that the young poet Amanda Gorman, whose emotional inaugural poem left the nation speechless, will recite an original piece at the Super Bowl LV.
Gorman, the youngest known inaugural poet, will recite a poem honoring three Honorary Captains; educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and veteran James Martin. These community heroes are being acknowledged for their selfless service during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are honored to recognize these three individuals who represent the best in all of us,” says NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a press release. “During this incredibly challenging time in our lives, Trimaine, Suzie, and James have exemplified the essence of leadership, each in their own way. We are grateful for their commitment and proud to share their stories and recognize them during this special moment on Super Bowl Sunday.”
The NFL surprised the three community leaders with a zoom call from NFL legends Dough Baldwin, Derrick Brooks, and Jerome Bettis.
Gorman’s poem about the three captains will highlight their shared “tremendous impact during an unprecedented year.”
The 22-year-old has recently been receiving a lot of buzz following her highly praised performance at the inauguration. Recently Gorman has signed to IMG Models and her presales for her poetry book have skyrocketed.
