Baby Phat is a retro classic for young ladies everywhere. The infamous brand, launched in 1999 by Kimora Lee Simmons, was a clothing staple in everyone’s closet. From jeans to track suits, anyone who was rocking the Baby Phat cat logo was the original hot girl.
Fans were excited when a relaunch happened in December of 2019. A classic was coming back with a modern twist. This time her daughters, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee, are mature enough to have an input on the business development and give it the fresh rebranding it needed.
“This is the retro brand that’s reborn looking through the eyes of young people like Ming and Aoki,” said Kimora Lee Simmons. Baby Phat has always been a family affair.
Of late Kimora has had fashion collaborations with Foot Locker and Forever 21, but now is turning her attention to beauty, which she is no stranger to. This week the ladies announced a collaboration with brand development company, HatchBeauty, to release a new collection of Baby Phat beauty products.
“We’re a family business … a heritage brand. It’s an old meets new legacy kind of a situation for me,” Kimora proudly states.
The first launch is a three-piece kit featuring a lip gloss, body lotion and scented, shimmery body spray. The three $45 kit fragrances —named Opulence, Divine, and Ethereal — match with each of the beauty line creators.
“Ming’s is Opulence. Ming is very similar to me, she gets the love of fashion, beauty and self-expression. The smell is also super yummy. It’s peachy and has orchid with the caramel,” she says. “Aoki’s is called Ethereal. Hers is more about a free-spirited attitude, being independent, a pursuit of knowledge. It’s kind of an uplifting decoration of independence. It’s like I am woman, hear me roar.”
In the future we can expect to see skin-care and color cosmetics, including a fun holiday drop.
